History of Welsh Love Spoons

________________________________

The Welsh Love Spoon is an intricate form of hand carving from the 1600s, with the oldest surviving example dating back to about 1650. According to Welsh folklore these ornately carved spoons were traditionally made by young men and offered as gifts to the girls they loved. The old English expression to 'go spooning' is believed to have its origin in early Wales.

Over the centuries giving and receiving love spoons has become a more widespread custom. It is now quite common to give love spoons to family and friends for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, christenings and other special events.

The spoons I carve have been made in the ancient Welsh tradition - hand carved from a single piece of wood that has either been found by or given.

The detailed themes on every spoon's handle are unique and symbolic. There is significance to each part of the spoon through which a message of love and intentions are passed.

Today, love spoons have become a highly collectable from of art, valued all over the world.
